What Happened to Gendry on 'Game of Thrones?' Here's Why He May Be Coming Back
Robert, a great warrior and charismatic man in his youth, took the throne through conquest in the war known as Robert's Rebellion , which began when the Prince of Dragonstone , Rhaegar Targaryen , allegedly abducted Robert's betrothed, Lyanna Stark. After the war and following Lyanna's death, Robert married Cersei Lannister to cement an alliance with House Lannister to hold the kingdoms together, but the marriage was loveless. Robert also had two younger brothers, Stannis and Renly. He and Cersei had three children: Joffrey , Myrcella , and Tommen.
King Renly Baratheon was the youngest of three brothers and thus fourth in line to inherit the throne after Joffrey , Tommen , and Stannis. Margaery Tyrell became Renly's queen when she married him in an alliance; however, it was her brother Loras whom he truly loved. During talks of an alliance with the Starks , his reign abruptly ended when a Shadow with the face of Stannis Baratheon killed Renly inside his tent.
But one big mystery that didn't even get a nod in the sixth season is the fate of Gendry, the former King's Landing rascal and apprentice blacksmith who seems to be the only living heir to the Baratheon line left in Westeros. When we last saw Gendry, Ser Davos had just saved his life and helped him escape Dragonstone in a rowboat at the end of the third season — but his story started way, way back in the first season. Ned realizes that Gendry is Robert's bastard son, but doesn't tell him. When King Robert dies, Gendry's boss at the smithy basically tells him to haul ass out of town, which saves his life when all of Robert's other illegitimate children are murdered. Gendry heads north with a host of Night's Watch recruits and Arya Stark, who was disguised as a boy named Arry.
